Any views or opinions represented or expressed in this interview belong solely to the interviewee and do not necessarily represent those of the 2025 organization, PostgreSQL Europe, or the wider PostgreSQL community, unless explicitly stated.

Aiven delivers hassle-free PostgreSQL on any cloud. Enjoy enhanced security, predictable pricing, and seamless integration with other data services. We automate complex ops, ensuring reliability and letting you focus on innovation, not infrastructure.

Why did you choose to sponsor PGDay UK 2025?

PostgreSQL is at the heart of what we do at Aiven, and we believe strongly in supporting the community that drives its success. Sponsoring PGDay UK 2025 is our way of contributing to that community, sharing knowledge, and connecting with developers, architects, and businesses that rely on PostgreSQL to power their data infrastructure. It is also a great opportunity to engage with users, exchange ideas, and hear directly from the people who are building with Postgres every day.

What makes your company a great place to work?

We believe in open minds, open discussions, and open source. And we value and celebrate the diversity of our people. Aiven is somewhere you can be your best, true self. The work we do at Aiven is anything but straightforward, so we must be bold and innovative. For us, it’s not what you think, but how you think that matters. We encourage everyone at Aiven to think sideways and take big leaps forward.

What is your PostgreSQL centered product or service?

Aiven for PostgreSQL is a managed PostgreSQL Instance offering automatic updates and upgrades with 99.99% uptime and 100% human support. That’s zero stress! You can spin up a database quickly on a cloud provider of your choice like AWS, GCP, Azure, Digital Ocean, and UpCloud. Once you select your plan, cloud provider and region, your service will start building. If you scale your workload to include multi-cloud redundancy or multi-region replication, you can go from a proof of concept to a production ready environment in a few clicks. Simply put, Aiven gives you the easiest way to spin up PostgreSQL services to fit your needs.

What do you think are the next biggest challenges for PostgreSQL in the future?

AI is incredibly good at writing SQL queries but doesn’t keep up with changes that come with an annual release cycle. It feels like anytime I need assistance with a query, I suggest that the Large Language Model (LLM) utilize the optimizations in the latest PostgreSQL release, which it struggles to do.

In the future, PostgreSQL documentation and content will not just need to be readable to users but also written in a way that is easier for LLMs to understand what is the available and preferred usage. This will become even harder as the number of developers who understand the fundamentals well enough to contribute to PostgreSQL will slowly diminish.

What is the most important feature in the latest PostgreSQL release?

The most important feature is Oauth support. I’m excited to see more and more secure authentication methods to protect data. Today, PG supports various authentication options like LDAP, RADIUS, and GSSAPI. These are great for traditional corporations. Now we have OAuth, which is really exciting because it offers enhanced opportunities for centralized identity and access management without the need for enterprise-grade identity solutions. Furthermore, it creates more opportunities for row-level security to be included in the initial design of systems. With this change you can determine data access at the database level instead of relying on applications to do it for you.

Which contribution to PostgreSQL from your company are you most excited about?

We’re always excited when Aivener’s contribute back to the community and the open source project. So we encourage our team to contribute to expand their knowledge; that one contribution can quickly evolve into a developer being more involved in the project’s development. That’s why we were excited to see a long-time community member and Aivener make their first code-contribution to the PostgreSQL project, and then quickly contributed again, this time to PG18, catching a bug before it went into the release!
